Acupuncture: How It Can Support Healing For Common Conditions
Chronic neck or back pain, depression and anxiety, fertility problems––these are all common conditions people manage every day. For some, treatments like medications, physical therapy, and other conventional approaches don’t always provide the full relief you’re hoping for. That’s where acupuncture can play a supportive role in your healing and overall well-being.
At Lincoln Medical Acupuncture in Lincoln, Nebraska, we take an integrative approach to care, combining Western medicine with acupuncture to support your overall health. Acupuncture works in different ways depending on the condition and area being treated, which is why every treatment is personalized. Our goal is to help you feel better, whether that’s more energy, less pain, or improved quality of life you can enjoy.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a reset button for your body. Using fine sterile needles inserted at specific points on the body, we can help stimulate your nerves, muscles, and circulation so they all work together more effectively. This stimulation encourages your body to release natural pain relievers, reduce inflammation, and calm the nervous system. Acupuncture supports your body so it can do what it already knows how to do: heal itself.
Most people feel relaxed during their acupuncture treatment. These very fine, sterile needles will cause little or no discomfort. The size and length of the needle will vary depending on the area being treated, and the number of needles used may vary from one visit to the next.
Most people cannot feel the insertion of the needles. After they are inserted and retained in the body for about 15-20 minutes, some people describe sensations like warmth, itching, slight aching, or a release of tension that is reported as pleasant and relaxing.
Common Conditions Acupuncture May Help
Acupuncture is a gentle, natural therapy that may help to relieve many common conditions by supporting the body’s ability to heal, reduce pain, and restore balance. Here are a few examples of conditions and how acupuncture may be beneficial.
Chronic Pain (back, neck, or joint pain)
Acupuncture can help reduce pain by stimulating the nervous system and encouraging the body to release natural pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins. It also improves circulation and helps to reduce inflammation in targeted areas, which can ease stiffness and support healing over time.
Acupuncture is especially helpful for pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments.
Headaches and Migraines
For headaches and migraines, acupuncture works by calming overactive pain pathways and reducing muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. Regular treatments may help to decrease the frequency, intensity, and duration of headaches while supporting better blood flow and nervous system regulation.
Mental Health (depression, anxiety, PTSD)
Acupuncture can have a deeply calming effect on the nervous system, helping the body shift out of “fight-or-flight” mode. By supporting balance in stress hormones and neurotransmitters, it may reduce symptoms like racing thoughts, tension, irritability, and emotional overwhelm. Many people describe feeling more grounded and resilient after treatment, making acupuncture a helpful complement to therapy or other mental health care.
Fertility Problems
When used alongside conventional fertility care, acupuncture may support reproductive health by improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, helping regulate hormones, and reducing stress—an important factor in fertility. It’s often used to support menstrual cycle regularity, ovulation, and overall reproductive function.
Sleep Disorders and Fatigue
Acupuncture helps promote more restorative sleep by calming the nervous system and addressing underlying imbalances that can interfere with rest. If you experience insomnia, frequent waking, or chronic fatigue, acupuncture may help to improve sleep quality, regulate circadian rhythms, and increase daytime energy, without relying on sleep medications.
Expert Care
Our acupuncturists––Sabrina Cerny, MD, and Vicki Black L. Ac.––bring years of experience and training to every visit. Their backgrounds allow them to consider all aspects of your health, from reviewing lab results, medications, and imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs to integrative medical advice on supplements, herbs, nutrition, and other traditional Chinese medicine tools.
By collaborating closely with your primary care provider, our acupuncturists develop treatment plans that are thoughtful, informed, and tailored to your needs. At every visit, you benefit from the integration of Western medicine and traditional acupuncture.
